The most recent entry in the series, Resident Evil: Village, has moved 6.1 million copies since its release in May of 2021. Both of the aforementioned Resident Evil games reached that mark long ago. The remake was met with widespread acclaim as it not only stayed true to the spirit of the original, but greatly enhanced the experience. As such, Capcop decided it would be a good idea to remaster the game for modern audiences to enjoy, releasing it in January 2019. It ended up having the reverse issue of the second game, where it somehow became even shorter to beat than the original 1999 version. The PlayStation title was a hit in its day, selling just shy of 5 million copies. The remake of Resident Evil 3 ended up feeling underwhelming to most due to it following the remake of Resident Evil 2, which had a significantly longer runtime. Resident Evil 2 was originally released in 1998 as a sequel to the original 1996 survival/horror classic that started it all.
